Finding Your Purpose Adds Enjoyment to Your Life

Do you feel you have a “purpose” in life, or are you going through life strictly by routine, expectations, and the need to make money?

There is a Japanese concept called “ikigai” that is about finding joy, fulfillment, and balance in the daily routine of life. Ikigai combines the terms iki, meaning “alive” or “life,” and gai, meaning “benefit” or “worth.”

The Main Concept of Ikigai

The concept of ikigai as a purpose in life with both personal and social dimensions is captured by the ikigai diagram.

This diagram on the right (via SavvyTokyo.com) includes overlapping spheres covering:

  • What you love
  • What you are good at
  • What the world needs
  • What you can get paid for

How to Find Your Ikigai

If you’re feeling unsure about what your ikigai is, there are a number of ways to refocus your mind and purpose. Hector Garcia, who wrote Ikigai: The Secret to a Long and Happy Life, said “If you find yourself blocked because change is difficult, try adding some new thing to your life: a new hobby, new circle of friends, or a new job on the side.”

Start by putting together a note of the top 10 things you have spent your time on this week. After writing them down, ask yourself if those things are adding purpose to your life. If not, think about what lights you up inside. Something you look forward to if you give yourself the time to pursue it.

How can you find the time to incorporate that into your life? For example, if you have always been inspired to write a book, can you wake up early each day to write for an hour? Or maybe you’ve always wanted to spend more time on the water kayaking and convening with nature. What can you do to fit that into your life?
